The NRRI Rapid Prototype Center provides research-based design and prototype services to businesses, industry, entrepreneurs and university researchers.

Key Services and Equipment

CAD Design and Modeling

  • Creating 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) models from original concepts for additive manufacturing
  • SolidWorks 3-D modeling/CAD software
  • Materialise Magics STL file editing software

Stereolithography (SLA)

  • Equipment: Viper from 3D Systems
  • Minimum Build Layer: standard resolution, 0.1 mm; high resolution, 0.05 mm
  • Beam Diameter: Standard Resolution: 0.25 mm; High Resolution: 0.075 mm
  • Maximum Build Size: 250 x 250 x 250 mm (10 x 10 x 10 in.)
  • Materials: Somos XC11122 Watershed Resin Transparent, water-resistant, high durability

 Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

  • Equipment: Vanguard Si2 high speed from
  • 3D Systems
  • Minimum Build Layer: 0.1 mm
  • Laser Type: 100 Watt CO2
  • Maximum Build Size: Width 370 x Depth 320 x Height 445 mm (14.5 x 12.5 x 17.5 inches)

Powder Materials:

    • Polyamide 11 (nylon 11) polymer
    • Glass-filled Polyamide 12 (nylon 12) polymer
    • Carbon fiber-filled Polyamide 11 (nylon 11)
    • Duraform Flex, a flexible, rubber-like material

PolyJet

  • Equipment: Stratasys Objet 260 Connex
  • Maximum Build Size:  260 x 260 x 200 mm (10.2 x 10.2 x 7.9 in.)
  • Minimum Build Layer: 16 or 30 microns

Materials Include:

    • Objet Tango, a family of rubber-like flexible materials
    • Objet Vero, a family of rigid materials
    • Two materials can be printed simultaneously to achieve durometers from shore A 27-95

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

  • Equipment: Titan 3-D Printer from Stratasys
  • Width of Extruded Material: 0.25 mm
  • Maximum Build Size: 406 x 355 x 406 mm (16 x 14 x 16 in.)
  • Material: ABS plastic
