From the Executive Director

Our Vision: To Discover the Economy of the Future

Man wearing a face mask sitting at desk writing The last quarter of our fiscal year included multiple changes and challenges. When the pandemic hit in March, NRRI was ready. Three days after the state shut down, through careful planning and with the full support of University leadership, NRRI personnel were back on the job to support our essential industries and critical agency programs. I couldn’t be more proud of our outstanding team of researchers, support staff and students and their commitment to keep one another safe while turning out excellent work.

NRRI has invested in our future and it is paying off. We have attracted new top talent, developed an efficient support staff, procured cutting edge instrumentation and introduced facilities and work practices to support our researchers in doing what they do best – innovative, applied research. As a result, NRRI has attracted new federal grant funding, formed new research partnerships and introduced several new research directions with exciting opportunities for Minnesota.

As I write this, we are introducing NRRI’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan with our shared vision to help “Discover the Economy of the Future.” As we pursue our innovation goals, we will grow our understanding of Minnesota’s resources, expand the portfolio of value-added products to keep revenue in Minnesota, strive to avoid waste and embrace life cycle thinking in all that we do. This approach is important for Minnesota to achieve a sustainable and resilient future.

The coming years will be even more challenging. In the face of economic uncertainty and tightening budgets, NRRI’s mission to deliver research solutions will become all the more important. With your help we look forward to the challenge of helping Minnesota identify opportunities and make sustainable choices for our future.

I invite you to enjoy our annual report and please share your questions and comments. We are your Natural Resources Research Institute.

Thank you for your support,
