Thomas Malterer, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate

Position and Focus

Thomas Malterer is a soil scientist and physical geographer by training. He has over 25 years of experience managing and directing projects and programs related to understanding the basic nature of peatlands and to the environmentally sound utilization of peatlands. His experiences include a statewide peatland assessment, working with several companies (resource assessment, permitting, initiation of production) to establish horticultural peat operations in Minnesota, development of value-added peat products, use of alternative biomass products as peat substitutes and preparation and characterization of biomass and coal slurry fuels for gasification. He is an internationally recognized peat expert and is a member in both the International Peat Society and the Minnesoa Peat Association.

Wetland Banking Fens Research Facility
To restore most of the effectively drained Fens Research Facility (Fens) to a variety of wetland types so new wetland credits can be deposited into a state wetland bank for future withdrawal as wetland mitigation credits.
