Iwao Iwasaki, ScD, Dr Eng, Endowed Taconite Chair

Position and Focus

Iwao Iwasaki holds the endowed taconite chair, a position established within the Minerals Division at the Coleraine Minerals Research Laboratory to address research on long-term problems of the iron ore industry of Minnesota. He is a metallurgical engineer with a broad background that extends from mineral processing to extractive metallurgy and to environmental technology covering air and water treatments as well as solid waste recycling. He has been actively engaged in teaching and research for over 40 years with 250 publications authored. His contribution has been recognized by the SME/AIME with Richards, Gaudin, Taggart, and Distinguished Member Awards and by election to the National Academy of Engineering.

Grant Writing and Grant Search for Minnesota Taconite Operations, State and Federal Department of Energy (DOE)

2009 USS Research Contract
NRRI`s Coleraine Minerals Research Laboratory (CMRL) will conduct research and development work for U.S. Steel`s Minntac and Keewatin Taconite plants in the areas of size reduction, classification, flotation, magnetic separation, filtering, balling, indurating, and pellet quality improvement. Research and development work will be conducted using bench and pilot scale equipment at CMRL in addition to in-plant test work at the mining operations plant sites.
