What is Happening to Moose in Northeastern Minnesota?

A VHF telemetry study showed higher than expected mortality of adults. At the same time people have been reporting seeing fewer moose and hunter success has been declining. Yet the aerial survey indicated that there was little change in the moose population of northeast Minnesota until 2010, when the point estimate of the moose population declined (although confidence intervals overlapped estimates for prior years). We’ve set up a new method to view the submitted pictures. We think it is a little easier to use, and thumbnails are easier to see. Try it and let us know: Do you agree?

We’ve also summarized the sightings reports submitted to date in the Animals and Images tab. There are some interesting patterns in calf:cow ratios that we’ll expand on later, as well as a map of all sightings reports.
