Study Areas

The dots on this map represent locations of one to several forest stands where breeding bird point counts are completed.

Data were collected from 1995-2001 in southeast Minnesota, from 1992 to 2003 in the Saint Croix area, from 1992 to present in the Chequamegon National Forest and from 1991 to present in the Chippewa and Superior National Forests.

In addition to population monitoring, intensive studies on breeding bird productivity and bird species response to patch size and edge are conducted on nine study plots located across northern Minnesota.

The study plots are one square mile in area and are located on a variety of land ownerships including federal, state, county, industry and private.

The large plots were chosen to represent the various forest management agencies that exist in northern Minnesota.
