Canada Lynx on the Border:
Biological and Political Realities for Conservation Planning
We have arranged for special workshop rates at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino. When you book your room be sure to mention that you are attending the Lynx workshop.
How to get to Grand Portage:
Click here for a pdf file from MapQuest.com. Or click here to go to directions live on MapQuest.
As you approach Grand Portage, the lodge and casino facility is literally at Milepost 144.
There is a lodging/gas sign about 1/4 mile before Milepost 144 that will get you there, but indirectly.
As you drive up to Grand Portage :
There was no construction last week when I drove this route
At the Forest Lake exit you can get coffee (west of I35) if you wait till out of town
At Hinckley is a traditional stop for some--Tobies--Rolls and coffee. Halfway to Duluth
In Duluth you can stop at Canal Park, or keep on going -- Ships and tourist area
On Highway 61 there are several state parks / pullovers on or near the shore. Nice.
Between Two Harbors and Grand Marais there are occasional settlements but tourist season is over
Cell phone coverage between Two Harbors and Grand Marais is spotty at best
Lastly, if it is not foggy, you can see Isle Royale from Highway 61 as you approach Grand Portage!
Sometime during the workshop, drive to a pullover on the other side of the hill for an even better view.
