These 3 pictures were taken at about
9:00 p.m. on Horseshoe Island in Saganaga Lake in the
BWCAW on June 18, 2004 . The animal walked through a
BWCAW campsite. It’s location on an island suggests
that the animal swam to or from the island at some point.
Note the tassels on the ears silhouetted in the picture
on the left. Also of interest is the behavior: the animal
walked through the campsite as shown in the picture sequence,
this is consistent with many of the Canada lynx reports
that are received by the lynx project. Thanks to Superior
National Forest Wilderness Ranger Sara Erickson for reporting
this sighting and providing the photographs.
Sometimes Canada lynx turn up in strange places. Kevin Gann, visiting the BWCA from Elroy, Wisconsin, saw an animal swimming towards his
campsite on Disappointment Lake in September, 2003. What
a surprise when the animal climbed out of the water!
