Canada Lynx in the Great Lakes Region

Lynx #9 was captured near Devils Track Lake by Grand on January 9th, 2004. This 14.75 pound female was fitted with a Telemetry Solutions GPS radiotelemetry collar and released.  She was located in the Grand Marais area throughout the spring, and then apparently disappeared from the area much like L4.

She was wearing a GPS collar with a drop-off mechanism so we had given her up as lost after not finding her during extensive searches.  We were amazed to get a call telling us that her collar had been found after snow melted in the spring of 2005.  L9 was caught in a trap in November 2004, but was not recovered by the trapper.  Dogs located the collar and the skeleton after snow melted, and we were fortunate that the finder turned the collar in.

The GPS collar told us why we lost contact with L9—when we were searching for her near Grand Marais, she had moved about 110 miles to the northeast of Thunder Bay!  At that point the GPS collar battery was completely drained, but we know that sometime between June and October she moved back into the Grand Marais area where she was caught in a trap.

Study animals are anaesthetized in many of the images on this site. They regain consciousness and leave the capture site shortly after processing is finished.
