Canada Lynx in the Great Lakes Region

Lynx #8 was captured along the Gunflint Trail near Hungry Jack Lake on December 11th, 2003. This 22 pound male was fitted with a standard VHF radiotelemetry collar and released.  He was located periodically in the general area shown on the map, as well as moving 10 to 15 miles north into Ontario.

In September 2005 his collar was detected in mortality mode near Granite Lake in Ontario.  When we located the remains on the edge of a beaver pond, the backbone was almost fully articulated even though almost all flesh was gone.  Legs had been moved about 15 feet away from the carcass to a nearby beaver lodge.  The bottom two pictures show some of the area where the remains were found.

Study animals are anaesthetized in many of the images on this site. They regain consciousness and leave the capture site shortly after processing is finished.
