Canada Lynx in the Great Lakes Region

L4, a 21.5 pound subadult male, was captured near the intersection of Gunflint Trail and East Bearskin Road on 9/14/2003. Movements for L4 were in Grand Marais and up the Gunflint trail near Bearskin Lake.  As indicated by the map he was also found in Ontario.  A GPS collar was deployed on L4 on 3/4/04, and his last known location was on 3/18/04.

Later in the March there was a report of a lynx wearing a black collar north of Fort Frances Ontatio, this report was not verified.  We did extensive aerial searches for the collar but failed to pick him up again.  The collar was outfitted with a drop-off mechanism and would have fallen off in August to September 2004, and by now the collar is no longer transmitting.

Study animals are anaesthetized in many of the images on this site. They regain consciousness and leave the capture site shortly after processing is finished.
