Canada Lynx in the Great Lakes Region

Lynx #27 is a female kitten that weighed about 13 pounds when she was captured on February 19, 2005. She was fitted with a kitten-sized VHF radiotelemetry collar and released near her Kane Lake capture site. L27 was not from one of the three den sites that were visited in 2004.

We lost contact with L27, although we were uncertain as to the reason. Radiotransmitter failure is a possibility, but with lynx it is also possible that they have moved. We did not really expect movement with L27, because none of the other kittens from known litters had made extensive movements before they were one year old.

In March 2006 we picked up L27’s collar giving out mortality signals, and we recovered the collar under the snow. When snow melts in 2006 we will look for other bones at the site the collar was found.

Study animals are anaesthetized in many of the images on this site. They regain consciousness and leave the capture site shortly after processing is finished.
