Lynx #19 (formerly Kitten #3) weighed about 14 pounds when she was captured north of Brimson, MN on March 1, 2005. She has been located with her mother (L13) several times since being fitted with a kitten-sized VHF collar and released. The family group has been seen crossing County 44 several times during the 2004-2005 winter. L19 was around Brimson for at least some of the summer of 2005, and then in the fall she moved about 30 miles southwest, towards Twig, MN. She spent about 4 weeks in that area, less than 10 miles northwest of Duluth! Unfortunately, she was shot in early November, 2005. We recovered her carcass probably within 24 hours of death. Included in the pictures are the location where she died, and a picture taken shortly after the carcass was recovered. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot L19, the reward has not been claimed yet. Also included is a picture of an engorged tick that was found on her back. We have found relatively few ticks on captured lynx so far. |
