Canada Lynx in the Great Lakes Region

Lynx #16 (formerly Kitten #1) weighed just over 12 pounds when she was captured south of Sullivan Lake with her mother (L07) on November 29, 2004. On March 28, 2005 she weighed just under 15 pounds when she was recaptured, again south of Sullivan Lake . She was still traveling with her mother at that time, as both were caught on the same day in the same location. K01 was fitted with a kitten-sized VHF collar and released. See the pictures of the family group (L07, K01, K02) on the Pictures page.

L16 died in April 2005.  She was hit by a train in the early hours of the morning, probably confused by the headlights shining on her face.  It is both ironic and tragic that she died less than 500 yards from the den site in which she was born.  Both her mother (L7) and her sister (L17) were in the area when she died.

Study animals are anaesthetized in many of the images on this site. They regain consciousness and leave the capture site shortly after processing is finished.
