Identification Information

Originator Brian Hargrave-Minnesota DNR
Title Minnesota Early Vegetation
Abstract This data set contains early settlement vegetation for Minnesota that is within the boundary of the Great Lakes Assessment (GLA) study area. The coverage was digitized by Brian Hargrave of the Minnesota DNR from a 1:500,000 scale paper map originally created by F.J. Marscner. Marschner's methods are not fully documented, but it is known that he used General Land Office (GLO) notes and maps from the original land survey conducted during 1847-1907 in Minnesota. He is thought to have supplemented this information with descriptions of soils, landforms and vegetation. GLA personnel re-projected the coverage, clipped it to the GLA boundaries and reclassed Marschner's vegetation codes to match the 8 class GLO vegetation codes.
After this data was assembled, it was clipped with the 50 km buffered basin boundary. This was done to provide easier access for downloading the data sets.
Purpose A base data layer.
