City Lights at Night

Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) sensors can detect low levels of visible-near infrared radiance (VNIR) at night. This includes lights from cities, towns, industrial sites, and sources of ephemeral radiation such as fires. This image of the Lake Superior Region shows the extent of human development within the Lake Superior Basin (red boundary) and surrounding landscape.

This image shows the city lights for the Lake Superior Basin. Click here for the compressed Grid file.

The Lake Superior Decision Support project is coordinated through the Center for Water and the Environment at the Natural Resources Research Institute. The project is funded by the USEPA Region 5 Coastal Environmental Management Grant Program through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  For comments on this project or this home page, contact George Host.  Last updated: Monday, January 31, 2000 16:27
