Thanks to the overwhelming success of the first five Indo-US Workshops on Mathematical Chemistry,  the Sixth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry is set for January 8-10, 2010, in Kolkata, India. In keeping with the form of the earlier meetings, this workshop will focus on the symbiosis between chemistry, pertinent areas of mathematical modeling, newer and effective computational approaches in chemoinformatics, environmental toxicology, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR),  quantitative molecular similarity analysis (QMSA), bioinformatics (including genomics and proteomics), and other relevant fields.

Subhash C. Basak,, President, International Society of Mathematical Chemistry (ISMC) and Dilip K. Sinha, President, Eastern Indian Chapter of ISMC, Kolkata, are the Chairpersons of the meeting from USA and India, respectively.

Objectives

  1. To review the progress in the field of mathematical chemistry and tangibly related areas.
  2. To bring scientists, teachers and scholars from various parts of the world and the country together for an effective interaction between them, geared for sharing their knowledge and experience concerning computer applications to pertinent problems.
To this end, there will be invited lectures and panel discussions. In addition, in keeping with the stated objectives for this workshop there will be an interaction session with students at the Masters/Graduate level to emphasize and highlight the prospects of mathematical chemistry and its expanding horizon.

Themes of the Workshop
Theme I: Mathematical characterization of molecular structure and chemical similarity.
Theme II: Applications of mathematical chemistry in molecular design, drug discovery and approaches in natural product chemistryand virtual screening.
Theme III: Emerging application of mathematical modeling in the "omics" sciences.
Theme IV: Mathematical chemistry in environmental toxicology and regulation of chemicals.

Abstracts for presentation as lecture or poster are now being accepted for the Sixth Indo-US Workshop. See the Call for Abstracts for details.

The Venue: The workshop will be held at the Heritage Institute of Technology Chowbaga Road, Anandapur, P.O.-East Kolkata Township, Kolkata- 700107, India

Conference attendees are advised to make travel and lodging arrangements early to avoid any reservation conflicts.

Climate: Kolkata has a tropical wet-and-dry climate (Koppen climate classification Aw). The annual mean temperature is 26.8 °C (80.2 °F); monthly mean temperatures range from 19 °C (66.2 °F) to 30 °C (86.0 °F).[45] Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the low 30's and during dry spells the maximum temperatures often exceed 40 °C (104 °F) during May and June.[45] Winter tends to last for only about two and a half months, with seasonal lows dipping to 9 °C – 11 °C (54 °F – 57 °F) between December and January.
