Thanks to the overwhelming success of the first four Indo-US Workshops on Mathematical Chemistry, a joint meeting of the Fifth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry and the 8th International Conference on Mathematical Chemistry is set for June 22-27, 2008 in Duluth, MN, USA. In keeping with the form of the earlier meetings, this workshop will focus on the symbiosis between chemistry, pertinent mathematical modeling, newer and effective computational approaches in chemoinformatics, environmental toxicology, QSAR, QMSA, bioinformatics (including genomics and proteomics), and other relevant fields.

Objectives

  1. To review the progress in the field of mathematical chemistry and tangibly related areas.
  2. To bring scientists, teachers and students from various parts of the world and the country together for an effective interaction between them, geared for sharing their knowledge and experience concerning computer applications to pertinent problems.
To this end, there will be invited lectures, panel discussions, and poster presentations. In addition, in keeping with the stated objectives for this workshop there will be an interaction session with students at the Masters/Graduate level to emphasize and highlight the prospects of mathematical chemistry and its expanding horizon.

Themes of the Workshop
Theme I: Mathematical characterization of molecular structure and chemical similarity.
Theme II: Applications of mathematical chemistry in molecular design, drug discovery and approaches in natural product chemistry.
Theme III: Emerging application of mathematical chemistry in Bioinformatics & proteomics.
Theme IV: Mathematical chemistry in environmental toxicology and regulation of chemicals.

Abstracts for presentation as lecture or poster are now being accepted for the Fifth Indo-US Workshop. See the Call for Abstracts for details.

The Venue: The Fifth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry will be held on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), Duluth, Minnesota, USA, June 22–27, 2008. Located on the western tip of Lake Superior, the city of Duluth, Minnesota receives over 3.5 million visitors annually. Duluth's many attractions and recreational opportunities make the city a popular vacation destination throughout the year, particularly during the summer months.

Conference attendees are advised to make travel and lodging arrangements early to avoid any reservation conflicts.

How to reach Duluth: Conference participants may choose to fly directly into Duluth, or may fly into Minneapolis-St. Paul, located three hours from Duluth by car. Northwest Airlines flies directly to Duluth from both the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport and Detroit.

Climate: In June, average temperatures in Duluth range between 53° F and 73° F (11° C to 23° C), with light winds. Extreme temperatures can reach into the low 90's (~33° C) in June, or dip into the high 30's and low 40's at night (~4-5° C). Some warmer, perhaps light woolen clothing, is advisable, especially for the early morning and evening, or when prevailing winds are from the east bringing in cooler air off of Lake Superior.
