| A joint meeting of the Eighth International Workshop on Mathematical
Chemistry and the Fifth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry with
applications to drug design, risk assessment of chemicals, chemoinformatics,
bioinformatics, computational biology and toxicology will be held in June
2008. The workshop will begin on June 22 and run through noon on the 27th
in Duluth, MN, USA. The meeting is sponsored jointly by the Natural Resources
Research Institute of the University of Minnesota Duluth (USA), the University
of Minnesota, and the International Society of Mathematical Chemistry.
Subhash C. Basak, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota Duluth (USA), and Douglas J. Klein, Department of Marine Sciences, Texas A&M University at Galveston (USA) are the chairmen of the joint meeting. The First International Conference on Mathematical Chemistry was organized at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA. Six further such conferences were organized at the University of Georgia; the Texas A&M University at Galveston; Bled, Slovenia; the University of Missouri at Kansas City; Pillochry, Scotland; and Girona, Spain. After the seventh event of the series in 1997, the International Society of Mathematical Chemistry (ISMC) did not organize further conferences of the series until now. In the meanwhile, interest in mathematical chemistry has expanded worldwide. Thus the ISMC is embarking on the organization of the eighth event of the series in the summer of 2008 on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Duluth event running from June 22–27, 2008, will be the confluence of two conferences: The Eighth International Conference on Mathematical Chemistry and the Fifth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry. The First Indo-US Workshop was held during January 9-13, 1998, at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India. The Second Indo-US Workshop was held at the University of Minnesota Duluth, USA, during May 30-June 3, 2000. Over one hundred scientists from four continents participated in both the First and Second Indo-US Workshops. The Third Indo-US Workshop was held August 2–7, 2003 at the University of Minnesota Duluth, USA. The Fourth Indo-US Workshop was held January 8–12, 2005 at the University of Pune, Pune, Maharashtra, India. The Mathematical Chemistry Conference and (Indo-US) Workshop are natural partners, and jointly are to bring together leading scientists involved in basic and applied research in the fields of Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Chemistry, and Computational Chemistry. Results of the latest research in these fields will be presented along with important applications of mathematical and computational approaches to chemistry, chemical combinatorics, chemical graph theory, drug discovery, environmental toxicology, partial orderings in chemistry, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR), quantitative molecular similarity analysis (QMSA), chemoinformatics and bioinformatics (including genomics, proteomics, systems biology, and metabolomics).
