The Natural Resources Geographic Information Systems (NRGIS) Laboratory was established in 1988 with a grant from the National Science Foundation. The facility is part of the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), whose mission is "to foster economic development of Minnesota's natural resources in an environmentally sound manner to promote private sector employment."
