GIS Facility

Geographic Information Systems Lab

The NRGIS facility is directed by Dr. George Host, and managed by Paul Meysembourg. Technicians employed by researchers at NRRI have expertise in remote sensing, aerial photo interpretation, GPS, and a variety of GIS techniques.

The NRGIS facility is housed in a specially renovated laboratory, which includes static free carpeting and special lighting. The laboratory is set up for GIS, remote sensing, and small, informal meetings. Staff offices adjoin the facility.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro based PC's are used to run GIS, remote sensing, and statistical software, including ARC/INFO, ARCView, ARCGIS, Erdas IMAGINE, GRASS, and S-Plus. PCs are used for an assortment of data input and analysis purposes. Input devices include digitizing tables, color scanner, film recorder, and GPS receivers. Output devices include large format (13"x19") inkjet and standard size color laser printers. The GIS lab also has the capability to print to NRRI's large format (54" wide carriage) Hewlett Packard Design Jet 3500 Color Inkjet printer. The facility is fully networked, both internally with fast ethernet connections and worldwide via the University of Minnesota's computing network.
