Growth ModelsAfter shading, photosynthesis, and transportation have occured, 1) Leaves grow in length and width Leaves and Internodes will continue to grow in length until they mature. From then on, the leaves will only grow in thickness, and the internodes will only grow in diameter. Green-Leaf Death - Green-leaf death takes place during the growing season. A leaf will die if it is not productive enough. (detailed information) Bud Set - If a branch is not producing enough photosynthate to keep producing new leaves and internodes, it will set it's buds. (detailed information) Branch Death - Branches are autonomous. If a branch has set it's buds and cannot produce enough photosynthate to support its respiration, it will die. (detailed information) Fall Leaf Senescence - Ecophys has a fixed date which the leaves will drop from the tree at the end of the growing season. A rate is also given to determine how fast the leaves will drop. Overwinter Storage - After Bud Set takes place, the leaves will start to prepare for the winter. Instead of using the majority of photosynthate for growth, now the majority will go towards storage to be used the following spring. Respiration - Leaves, Internodes and Roots all respire throughout the growing season. In Ecophys, maintenance respiration is based on the tissue's mass, as well as the current temperature. There is also an additional respiration tax for growth.
