Jim Miller rocks as UMD-NRRI Geologist

Jim Miller

It’s said that every rock tells a story, and Jim Miller is passionate about rock stories. That’s a good thing because rocks, and the valuable minerals they hold, are his life’s work.

Miller is administrative director of the UMD-NRRI Precambrian Research Center and associate professor of geological sciences at UMD. He’s new to the NRRI staff, joining part time in January, 2008, although he’s had an office at NRRI since 2000, as an employee of the Minnesota Geological Survey.

“As director of the Precambrian Research Center, I am in charge of planning, promoting and implementing the center’s programs—field camp, professional workshops, outreach and student assistance,” said Miller. “As a UMD professor, I teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and advise several graduate students each year.”

Miller’s challenge? To learn to be a better time manager, he says.

His main areas of research are field and analytical studies of the petrology and metallogeny of Duluth Complex intrusions in northeastern Minnesota. Miller is also involved in outreach activities through lectures and workshops for the general public and K-12 educators.

Miller is married to Ginny Aldag and has two teenage children, Jay and Sam. His favorite things include:
