Current research efforts of Ely Field Station personnel include (A) the evaluation of algae as indicators of ecological disturbance in the Great Lakes (GLEI), (B) paleolimnological assessments of geochemistry, nutrient loading and shoreland development effects on lakes near Ely and Tower, (C) calibration of diatom algae in 116 northern Minnesota lakes in the development of a reconstructive model for lakewater quality, (D) paleolimnological evaluation of sedimentation rates and nutrient enrichment in Zippel Bay, Lake of the Woods. These projects involve interaction with lake and property owners' associations, county, state and federal agencies, and state legislators.
