Notes from Wetland Field check for Poplar River Watershed.

June 29-30, 2004 with Paul Meysembourg and Gerry Sjerven

66 polygons +/- 5 polygons

Site 1:

Culvert drained, unconsolidated bottom with emergent and scrub shrub surrounding he northern edges. Error in the mapping of the lake, thought to be coding error and later confirmed.

Site 2:

Change the AB to emergent.

Site 3:

Not FO, check with the DNR streams database to confirm it includes the stream. Large culverts look to have been installed in the past 5 years. Is it possible to find out when they were installed?

Site 4:

Delete the Forested Wetland, area confirmed not to be wet.

Site 5:

Change to scrub shrub to FO/SS with a birch component, saturated (B).

Site 6:

Logged area – poplar re-growth, could explain scrub shrub to the north. Recheck the photo.

Site 7:

Seasonally saturated, d not b.

Site 8:

Emergent areas missed in the shadows of the photo. Recheck the photos, I think we did get them, just hard to see at this scale.

Site 9:

Took pictures 117-118.

Site 10:

Seasonally flooded FO, probably FO4.

Site 11:

Remove the emergent area.

Site 12:

Looks good, good example of a tag aldar.

Site 13:

Forestry with a scrub shrub understory.

Site 14:

Change emergent to scrub shrub under story of emergent.

Site 15:

Forested area both sides of creek, FO4, saturated ground (B).

Site 16:

Scrub shrub is suspect, possibly delete after revisit.

Site 17:

Scrub shrub is confirmed, saturated tag alder.

Site 18:

Confirmed scrub shrub tag alder, saturated with standing water.

Site 19:

Confirmed forested (FO4), saturated, located on power line strip.

Site 20:

Confirmed forested area around state trail, saturated.

Site 21:

Should be scrub shrub with emergent, was emergent with scrub shrub.

Site 22:

Change from emergent with scrub shrub, to scrub shrub with emergent. Same situation as site 21.

Site 30:

Recheck the stream course and tighten up the polygons. Confirmed to be forested and seasonally saturated, but smaller ban.

Site 44:

Emergent were found to not be there, so there were deleted. The area beyond the emergent areas were also walked and found to be further in then digitized. Remove the forested area back to the change in elevation. Follow closer to the contour lines.

Site 55:

Area north of Lutsen ski resort. Revisit the area, add a sliver of scrub shrub along the shore of the emergent. Separate the emergent stand from the scrub shrub near the bend of the river. Visually confirmed the scrub shrub and emergent areas across the river, but need to take a look at the photos again to confirm. We continued off trail to the north, but determined we need more information, a gps, before continuing.

Site 66:

We attempted to find a logging road that would have allowed us to get near a couple of polygons. We were unable to determine which road was which, so we were unable to stop. From the road we could determine that the areas closest to the road were confirmed. If we have time and a GPS, we will consider visiting this area again when we do the Grand Marais area.

Site 77:

Too remote of an area, we traveled half way down the road but turned around due to concerns for the vehicle.

Site 88:

The scrub shrub and the emergent areas on both sides of the roads were visited. While it may have been scrub shrub with emergent 5-7 years ago, it is now a forested area. Very close to what is displayed on the original NWI coverage. Although, without the scrub shrub under story.

Site 99:

At the end of the road we confirmed the forested area. On the other side of the road confirmed the forested stand continued across the roads. Hiked back to the emergent area and scrub shrub located through the woods. Other area at the ‘Y’ of the road and the private road, confirmed the forested area to the east of the private road was saturated year round, (picture of boot). A lot of cedar stands in the area. The area to the west of the private road was correct type but needed to be only 20 or so feet from the private drive.
