Metadata Summary

Originator
Abstract The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary, federal farm program that pays landowners to remove highly erodible, rapidly eroding, or other environmentally sensitive croplands from production and plant them to grass or trees for 10 to 15 years. The Minnesota CRP GIS Database is a statewide and county mapping and database tool for analyzing lands enrolled in the CRP. This digital data set is derived from an ARC/INFO polygon coverage that consists of field boundaries and associated attribute data for land enrolled in the CRP in Minnesota through the 12th signup. Field boundaries were digitized using photocopies of USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) unrectified, non-orthogonalized black-and-white airphotos at a scale of approximately 1:8,000, with CRP land identified by FSA with handwritten annotations. County boundaries are from the 1990 US Census Bureau TIGER. Attribute data were derived from FSA farm records databases maintained by individual FSA field offices located in most counties throughout the state. The attribute data include farm, tract, field, and CRP contract numbers, CRP cover type or conservation practice, contract end year (all contracts expire September 30, unless terminated or released early), annual per-acre CRP rental rate, erodibility designation by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), land capability based on a classification system developed by NRCS (classes I through VIII and subclasses e, w, s, and c), and presence/absence of wetlands or converted wetlands.
