Forest Inventory - Common Forest Service CSA

This page last updated: 2004-04-14 10:51:35.0
Metadata created using Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines

Metadata Summary

Originator
Abstract Digital Cooperative Stand Assessment (CSA) inventory data. This layer represents individual forest stands that are managed by the US Forst Service. The data were originally photo-interpreted. Many stands have since been field measured. This layer is part of a cooperative effort by the DNR, USFWS, and county land agencies to produce CSA layers with a common data structure. Each agency has translated their data to this (more general) format which contains the common elements found in each agencies CSA databases. Use in conjunction with the Common CSA layers created by the State and county land agencies.
Use Tips There is some overlap between this data and the State and County Common CSA data layers. Use with caution.

Attribute Accuracy
Logical Consistency Data exhibit some overlapping area features that require management using ARC/INFO region data structures. There are many errors in the location of township and forest stand boundaries, both between and within public agencies. This causes gaps and overlaps in polygons to occur between section and township lines.
Completeness This CSA data has been translated from the MNDNR, Superior National Forest, and St.Loius county data.

Entity and Attribute Overview Data Elements for Attribute Table FORST_CSAFPY3.PAT:

AGE: Average stand age in years. Age values pertain to the main cover type and reflect the main size class of the species to be managed. Average type age is determined by taking core samples from representative trees

COVER_TYPE: Major forest type int the stand based on basal area or some derivative of basal area (i.e. volume).

COVER_SIZE: Average size in diameter of breast height (d.b.h.) of the cover type.

STOCKING: An indication of growing-space occupancy relative to a standard. Usually based on basal area or stand density (stems/acre).

MEASURE_YEAR: The year the stand level data was collected.

SITE_INDEX: A measure of actual or potential forest productivity, expressed in terms of the average height of trees included in a specific stand component (site index species).

SITE_SPP: Tree species that site index was measured on

ADMIN: Manager of the stand.

RECON: The method used to inventory the stand.

STAND-ID: Each agency's unique stand-id
