LiDAR for Minnesota

Current Status
Minnesota Elevation Mapping Project

Current Status map for LiDAR in the Arrowhead of Minnesota, January 2012
The project team identified data quality issues with the edge-of-water breaklines on the second delivery and brought them to the attention of the vendor. Working with the vendor these issues are being resolved. Note that the data quality issues were not with the elevation data itself, but the breaklines that are used to create output products such as contours and hydro-flattened DEMs.

Product Deliverables

Educational Links and Tools
The Water Resources Center of the University of Minnesota is organizing a number of workshops available around the state. A complete schedule and more information can be viewed at http://wrc.umn.edu/randpe/agandwq/tsp/lidar/.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has provided a number of powerpoint presentations and other training materials for LiDAR. Follow the 'Training' link and the 'Tools' link.

Download LiDAR
LiDAR Data can be downloaded from the Minnesota Department of Minnesota at ftp://lidar.dnr.state.mn.us/. The data is also available from the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office at ftp://ftp.lmic.state.mn.us/pub/data/elevation/lidar/. This includes all of the LiDAR data for Minnesota. We recommend the MnGEO site.

NRRI provides a link to a copy of the data for the Arrowhead of Minnesota at http://gisdata.nrri.umn.edu/lidar/. This option is currently being redesigned.

Bathymetric LiDAR
for the Lake Superior Shoreline from NOAA. Data can be downloaded by using the Digital Coast: Data Access Viewer.

The Minnesota DNR took the Bathymetric data from NOAA and created a DEM, Hillshade, and more which available from the MN DNR via FTP. Look under data/projects/lake_superior_bathy.

works to promote the creation of statewide digital elevation data that is consistently accurate and available to the public, and advises MnGeo.

LiDAR Research and Education Subcommittee
works to design and promote best practices with LiDAR data, LiDAR-derived products and LiDAR training statewide.
