Our research areas include studying hybrid poplar by focusing on genetic improvements and yield issues. NRRI works in conjunction with Minnesota Forest Productivity Research Cooperative creating one of the largest and most successful programs in the world.
Our results show that significant yield gains and cost reductions (80% yield increase in some cases) are routinely accomplished through this program.
NRRI is also cooperating with researchers from the University of Minnesota at a site near St. Peter, Minnesota. This site shows promise of growing poplar trees to 50 - 60 feet tall in just seven years.
HybridPoplar.org is a Web site managed by the University of Minnesota Crookston. It has good, general information about short rotation forestry of hybrid poplars.
