March 2007:
This Corvette tire and wheel was runner up at the 2007 3D Systems User Group in the Advanced Finishing category. Finishing techniques are essential to bring a prototype model from its original machine form to the level that closely resembles or mimics the actual product or part. The Northern Lights Technology Center chose to design and build a 3/8 scale model of a 20 inch Corvette Tire and Wheel. The prototype was made in two different materials to better simulate an actual tire and wheel. Selected Laser Sintering (SLS) technology was selected to make the components of the tire and wheel based on the types of materials that can be run. Duraform Flex was chosen as the material for the tire since the material properties of the Flex material closely resembles an actual flexible tire. |
